Moisture Mapping Determining Acceptable Moisture Levels in Hardwood Floors

What is Moisture Mapping?

Moisture mapping is a crucial step in the installation and maintenance of hardwood floors. It involves using a moisture meter to measure the moisture content of the subfloor and the hardwood flooring to ensure that they are within acceptable levels.

Acceptable Moisture Levels

The acceptable moisture level of a hardwood floor is between 6% to 9% moisture content (MC). This range allows the wood to expand and contract without causing damage due to excessive moisture or shrinkage caused by dryness.

Subfloor Moisture Content

The subfloor moisture content should not exceed 12%. If the subfloor is too moist, it can lead to moisture absorption by the hardwood flooring, which can cause buckling, warping, or other damage.

Acceptable Moisture Reading in a Hardwood Floor

When conducting a moisture mapping test, it is important to take multiple readings across the entire floor, including in different areas of the room and near walls or windows. Readings should be taken from the top surface of the flooring, not the bottom.

If the moisture content of the hardwood flooring is consistently within the acceptable range of 6% to 9% MC, it is considered an acceptable reading and the floor can be installed safely.

Consequences of Incorrect Moisture Readings

Incorrect moisture readings can lead to several issues, including:

  • Buckling or cupping of the hardwood floor
  • Warped or cracked planks
  • Mold or mildew growth beneath the flooring
  • Voiding of the flooring warranty

To avoid these issues, it is essential to perform moisture mapping and ensure moisture levels are within acceptable ranges.
